Catharsis is reiniging in het Grieks, het thema van de negende van Machine Head. Robb Flynn en co. zijn in de loop der jaren doorgestoten naar de absolute top in metalkringen. Hoewel, eigenlijk vanaf debuut Burn My Eyes behoort de band al bij de elite. Dit is het vervolg op Bloodstone & Diamonds uit, Catharsis verschilt wel van de voorganger, want de nummers zijn korter en groove geörienteerd lijn. Machinale riffs, woeste breakdowns en giftige gitaarsolo’s, maar dit keer ook rustpunten Bastards en Behind A Mask. Catharsis is Machine Head's uitlaatklep en geestelijke reiniging.
