Eigenlijk kan hij wel janken, maar dat doe je niet zegt Sam Beam van Iron & Wine. En ondertussen schrijft hij al sinds 2001 songs waar de tranen in grote hoeveelheden uitvloeien. Ongezellige songtitels als ‘Dead Man’s Will’ en ‘Song In Stone’ spreken wat dat betreft voor zich. Met zijn zachte, berustende, kalme stijl maakte Beam al vijf noemenswaardige albums. Het zesde ‘Beast Epic’ gaat weer meer terug naar zijn vroege albums toen schaarse arrangementen en weinig nadruk op ritme de songs zo heerlijk loom en voortkabbelend maakten. Beam is een scherpe observator die heel licht ook wat vreugde laat horen. Bovenal heeft hij een hoge schoonheidsverwachting. The album brims with surprise flourishes, classic touches and an appealing confidence that is evident on many of the songs. Luister ook naar het Jordanaires koortje in ‘Bitter Truth’.
